第１０話『死の試練』

自分にとってクロノとは何か？ とマイラは考えることがある。正直に言えば、マイラはクロノが好きではなかった。
四年前、クロノはクロフォード邸に現れた。足を挫いたクロードを奇怪な乗り物に乗せてだ。
戦友であり、同僚であるオルトはクロードを救ったことに感謝していたし、マイラも少しくらいなら感謝してやっても良いと思った。
謝辞を述べ、数枚の金貨を渡す。マイラの考えた感謝はそのようなものであったが、オルトはクロノに興味を持ったようだった。
マイラと違い、オルトは傭兵という明日をも知れぬ職業に就きながら知識を身に付けることを力を注ぐ、そんな男である。
器用に立ち回ればそれなりの地位に就けた逸材、そんな彼が南辺境に留まった理由は自分の知識を実践できる場だからだ。
実際、彼の知識は南辺境の開拓に大きく貢献していたので、クロードでも彼の意見を無視することはできなかった。
結論から言えばオルトの予感は的中した。クロノは別の世界から来た人間であり、それを彼の所持品が事実であると証明していた。
だが、クロードの恩人で、異世界から来た点を除けばクロノは凡庸な……いや、ダメ人間だった。
剣術も、魔術も使えず、小太りで、役に立つかどうかも分からない知識はあるくせに帝国の言葉も話せず、文字も書けない穀潰しだった。
おまけにクロノはよく泣いた。クロードに剣の稽古を付けられて泣き、夜中にめそめそ泣き、朝になって起こしに行くと、枕を濡らしていた。

そして、かつてのダメ人間は四年の歳月を経て立派な雄へと成長した。あの若さは二十年も男っ気がないマイラにとって毒である。

けれど、原生林を切り開き、大地を耕し、作物を育てる真っ当な日々がクロードとマイラから憎悪と狂気を奪った。
領民から頼られて、愛されて、守るべきものがあるのに、どうして、憎悪と狂気に身を委ねることができるだろう。
「ならば南辺境にいる全軍を動員してクロノを救出するしかないな」

ガウルの提案にクロードは頷いた。
だが、
「恐れながら、クロノ様は蛮族を恭順させる策があると」
マイラは偽りを口にした。

南辺境にいる軍を動員すればクロノの救出は成るだろう。だが、交渉の余地があるかも知れないとクロノは言ったのだ。

レイラとフェイは悲壮感を漂わせながら俯いた。クロノが助けを求めていたら、二人きりで蛮族に戦いを挑みかねない。

きっと、そこまでして力を手に入れても自分は後悔するのだ。
