アレオス山地と南辺境の境には原生林が広がっている。ケフェウス帝国の北にある昏き森のような不吉な名も、神代の魔物が棲むという伝説すらないが、領民は森に近づこうとしない。
不吉な名も、伝説も人を傷つけない。それらは勇気ある若者か、欲に凝り固まった商人がその気になれば単なる迷信に成り果てる。
この原生林に人が近づかないのは狼や熊以上の現実的な脅威として蛮族が住んでいるからだ。
夜……三月に大隊長として任命されたばかりのガウルは原生林と対峙するように陣を敷いていた。
本陣は百の重装騎兵に守られ、正面には重装歩兵と歩兵が七百、その左右を二百の歩兵が固めている。
無数の篝火を焚いたことで視野は確保できている。
今夜こそ、今夜こそ血祭りに上げてやる、とガウルは槍を持つ手に力を込めた。力が全身に漲っている。

ケフェウス帝国の南端、アレオス山地の裾野に広がる地域は南辺境と呼ばれている。クロノが治めるエラキス侯爵領も、カド伯爵領も辺境には違いないのだが、北辺境とは呼ばれていない。
その原因は新旧貴族の対立にあるんじゃないかとクロノは睨んでいるのだが、名前の由来はさておき、自己紹介の時に南辺境出身と言えば、大抵の貴族は田舎者とか、成り上がり者の息子と思い込んでくれたので、軍学校時代は役立ってくれた。
クロノの経歴は嘘で塗り固められている。下手に興味を持たれると、嘘を吐く羽目になるし、一つ嘘を吐くと、次から次へと嘘を吐く悪循環に陥りかねない。その点で南辺境出身という肩書きは言い訳として便利だった。

きっと、馬鹿にしたヤツは覚えていないだろうけど、自分の苦手なフィールドで努力して、結果を出したことは自信に繋がる。
僕は出来たんだぞ！ って、自信だ。軍学校では凄い勢いで落ち零れたし、馬鹿にされもしたけれど、プライドの在り方を学んだような気がする。
