実技試験の日になった。
さすがに真夏ということもあり、朝から蒸し暑く、少し体がだるい。
俺の部屋は二階の南東だが、昨夜は木窓を開けて寝ても風が通らず、部屋の中は蒸し暑かった。更に網戸と言う便利な物が無いため、蚊が入り込み、それも寝不足の原因の一つだった。
ちなみに部屋割だが、俺の横、北東がリディの部屋で、シャロンは俺の向かい側の南西の部屋に決まった。リディの部屋の向かいの北西の部屋は客用として、ガイが使っている。

いつもの日課である素振りをしてから、共同の水場である井戸に向かう。
既に隣のハンナさんが水を汲みに来ており、笑顔で挨拶を交わす。
顔を洗い、汗を拭き取ってすっきりしたところで、家に戻ると、既にシャロンが朝食の準備を終えていた。

一時間ほどのんびりと過ごしていると、十時の鐘が聞こえてきた。
俺はゆっくりと体を起こし、「そろそろ待合室に入れそうだし、そっちに行こうか」と言って、待合室に指定されている教室に向かった。


待合室には五人ほどの受験生が待っていた。
皆緊張しているのか、おしゃべりをするような者もおらず、熱心に参考書のようなものを読んでいる。

（五人ってことはあと一時間くらいか。もう少し横になっていても良かったかな。それにしても、俺たち以外はみんなガチガチじゃないか。まあ、これが普通なのかもしれないが……）

俺たちが待っていると、突然、ガラリと扉が開かれ、番号と名前を呼ばれる。
その音に受験生たちはビクリと反応し、呼ばれた受験生はカクカクといった歩き方で職員と一緒に待合室を出て行った。
一時間ほど待つと、ようやく俺の番が回ってきた。

俺は「はい」と元気よく答えて、立ち上がる。
