押し付けられたアルトリアさんのステータスを、アルトリアさんを抱きかかえたまま何とかして確認することに成功した。

マイナスの数値なうえに、俺の運を軽々と超えてやがる。しかも、その隣にはよく分からない称号のようなものまで表示されてるし……。
頭の中でいろいろ考えていると、アルトリアさんが寂しそうに説明する。
「運の数値……とんでもないだろ？ それ、その横に書いてある【災厄を背負う者】ってやつの効果なんだよ」

「そうだ。生まれた時から、その呪いはオレにかかっていた。効果は単純。運の数値にマイナスが付く……ただそれだけだ」
それはつまり、アルトリアさんの運がマイナスになってしまうということか……。
もし、この呪いがなかったら、アルトリアさんは俺以上の運を持っていることになる。
どうして……。
そう思っていると、アルトリアさんはそんな俺の心情を察してか、教えてくれた。
「ま、オレも何でこんな呪いがかかってんのかは分からねぇんだよな。この呪いのおかげで何度死にかけたことか……。それに、オレが死にかけるならまだいい。耐えられないのは、オレの周りにいるヤツらにまでオレの呪いの被害が出てしまうことだ」

「テルベールは、そんなオレの事情を知ってる、とあるヤツのおかげで町全体に特殊な結界が張ってある。おかげで付近にいる人間に迷惑をかけることはあっても、町全体を不幸にすることはなかった。だから、オレは基本、テルベールから離れることはない。他の街に行けば、それだけで周りを不幸にしちまうからな……」
アルトリアさんにとって、呪いというものは、自分に対する不幸なんかじゃなくて、周りが不幸になることなんだ……。
そう気づいたとき、俺はあまりの理不尽さに怒りが込み上げてきた。
何で、こんなに優しい人が、辛い思いをしないといけないのか……。
「だからよ。みんなオレを避けるんだ。確かに悲しいけどよ、それ以上にオレのせいで周りを不幸にしちまうことの方が……もっと悲しいんだよ」

「オレの呪いを解く方法はねぇ。結界を張ったヤツも、オレのためにいろいろ探してくれたんだけどな。結局見つからなかった。だから、これから先も、オレは周りを不幸にし続けるだろう。オレは、この世界にとって、不要な人間なのさ。そして、そんなオレの不幸に、お前たちを巻き込んじまって……本当に……悪い……」
アルトリアさんはそこまで言うと、顔を俯かせた。
本当に俺はバカだった。ここまで深刻に悩んでいたってのに、まったく気づくことすらできず、挙句の果てにはアルトリアさんを傷つけてしまった。そんなことって軽い気持ちで答えた俺を、殴り飛ばしてやりたい。
不謹慎かもしれないが、結果的にアルトリアさんのことを知れて、嬉しかった。
依頼を受けているときは、どこか近寄りがたい雰囲気を出していたし、その理由を知ることさえできなかった。
でも、こうしてアルトリアさんの抱えていたことを知ることができた。
そして、そんな事情を打ち明けてくれたアルトリアさんに、俺は一つ伝えたい。
それが、どこまでアルトリアさんの心を助けることになるのかは分からない。もしかしたら、助けるどころか、また傷つけてしまうかもしれない。
それでも、どうしても伝えておきたいのだ。
「アルトリアさん。俺は、アナタと出会えたことが決して不幸だなんて思いません」

「もちろん、俺だけじゃなく、サリアも同じ気持ちなはずです」

「確かに、今回のように一つ間違えば死んでしまうような出来事に巻き込まれました。でも……生きてます。俺もサリアも……無事です」

俺がそう問いかけると、アルトリアさんは顔を俯かせたまま、小さく頷く。
「不幸か幸福かなんて、結局その人次第なんですよ。その人が不幸だと思えば、それは不幸になるし、逆に周りからどれだけ哀れに見えても、本人が幸せを感じているのなら、それは幸福なんです。そして、俺とサリアにとって、アルトリアさんと過ごしたことは――――決して不幸なんかじゃなかった。これは、アルトリアさん自身が何と言おうとも、絶対に譲りません」

でも、今言ったことは、俺の本心だ。だから、絶対に伝えたかった。
俺とアルトリアさんの間を、再び沈黙が支配していると、今まではしゃいでいたサリアが駆け寄ってきた。
そして、俺が抱えているアルトリアさんに近づく。

サリアは、アルトリアさんに近づいたと思ったら、俺の腕からアルトリアさんを抱きかかえ、そのままギュッと抱きしめた。
「アルトリアさんが、不幸に思うなら、私がその分幸せにしてあげる！ だって、こんなに優しい人が、不幸だなんて間違ってるもん！」

俺はサリアの言葉に、思わず笑みがこぼれた。
さっきまではしゃいでいたのに、なんでサリアはアルトリアさんの抱えているモノをこうも簡単に見抜いてしまえるんだろうか？
やっぱり、人間とは違って、野生動物ならではの鋭い洞察力があるんだろうか？
なんにせよ、サリアはどこまでも人を癒すことが得意だよな。自覚なしでやってるところが凄い。

黙々と歩き続けていると、とうとう王都テルベールの門にまでたどり着いた。

たどり着いたのはいいが、何やら門の周辺が騒がしい。
「何かあったのかな？」
サリアも騒がしいことに気づき、そう訊いてくる。
俺も分からないので、一緒に首を捻っていると、見知った顔が俺たちの方に気が付き、そして驚きの表情を浮かべ、駆け寄ってきた。
「おい、誠一！ それに、サリア嬢ちゃんとアルトリアも！」
「あ、クロード」
駆け寄ってきたのは、テルベールの兵士でもあるクロードだった。
クロードは、何やら必死の表情で駆け寄ってきたかと思うと、一気に詰めよってくる。
「お前ら、今までどこ行ってやがった!? 心配したんだぞ!?」
「へ？」
あまりの剣幕と質問の内容に、思わず間抜けな声を出してしまう。
「スライムを倒しに行ってから、３日も帰ってこないしよ……本当に何してやがった！」
「ち、ちょっと待ってくれ！」
俺は一度クロードを静止して、頭を働かせる。
今、クロードはなんて言った？ ３日も帰ってこなかったって言わなかったか？

だが、そんな質問に、クロードは眉を寄せて答えた。

つまり、あの迷宮で過ごしている間に、外では３日も経っていやがったのか……。
呆然とする俺たちの様子を見て、クロードも何かを察したのか、最初の勢いが消え、今度は安心した表情を浮かべた。
「よく分からねぇが……とにかく、お前らが無事でよかったよ。今から、お前らの捜索に行こうかと思ってたところだ」

「クロード。もしかしてだが、俺たち３人がいなくなっただけで、あの門の周辺にいる人間集めて捜そうとしてくれてたのか？」
ありえないと思いつつもそう訊くと、クロードはなんてことない様子で言ってのけた。
「当たり前だろ？ 知り合いがいなくなったら、誰だって心配するし、捜すだろ」

再び俺たち３人は呆然とさせられた。
普通、知り合いでもいきなりいなくなったからといって捜したりはしない。
それだというのに、クロードたちは俺たちを捜すために集まってくれていた。
言葉を失っている俺たちの前で、クロードは集まっていた人間に大きな声で告げた。
「おーい！ ３人とも帰ってきたぞぉ！ お前ら、集まってくれてありがとうな！」
クロードの言葉を聞いた人たちは、みんな安心した様子で、俺たちに向かって次々と言葉をかけていった。
「おお！ それは良かった！」
「心配したんだよ？」
「今度からはいきなりいなくなったりするんじゃねぇぞ」
みんな、笑顔で俺たちにそういうと、そのまま門の中へと帰って行った。
「さて、お前らが無事に帰ってきたことだし、俺も仕事しますかねぇ」
クロードも、背を伸ばしながらそう言う。
そして、何か思い出した様子を見せると、俺たちに言った。
「あ、そうそう。お前らのこと、ギルドの連中も心配してたぞ？ 早く帰って顔見せてやれよな」
それだけ言うと、クロードも門の方へと歩いて行った。
今さらだけど、誰も俺がアルトリアさんをお姫様抱っこにしていることにツッコミを入れてこなかったな。
唖然としながらも、俺たち３人は手続きを済ませ、門の中へと入った。
顔を見せようとギルドに向かう道中、街の人々がアルトリアさんを見ては、安心した表情を浮かべ、何人かは俺がアルトリアさんを抱きかかえていることに疑問を抱いているかのような表情を浮かべていた。
そんな周りの人たちの表情を見ながら歩いていると、いつの間にかギルドに到着していた。
妙なことに、いつものようにギルド内から叫び声などは聞こえないが、どこか慌ただしい雰囲気が感じられた。
首を傾げながらもギルドに足を踏み入れると、いつもの様子との違いに俺たちは再び唖然となる。
「おい、情報はあったか！」
「いや、相変わらずだ」
「新情報だ！ 何でも３日前、アルトリアたちが戦ってたスライムが突然消える現象を目の当たりにしたヤツがいるらしい」
「私も、多くの幼女と触れ合い、情報を集めたが……おススメのお菓子屋しか分からなかったよ」
