With regard to the question of whether parental distress and symptom expression was predictive of response to treatment, the current data suggest a positive linkage. Baseline levels of parental distress were found to be predictive of both degree of change in percep- tions of family resilient functioning and posttreatment reductions in distress. Parents who reported higher levels of initial distress were more likely to endorse higher levels of per- ceived improvement in family functioning and greater reductions in posttreatment dis- tress. There are a number of possible explanations for this. For example, more highly distressed parents may be more sensitive to improvements in family functioning or may have families that had lower initial levels of family resilient functioning to begin with, thereby offering a greater potential range for improvement. A similar ceiling effect may be

at work in the finding that there were greater posttreatment reductions in parent distress for those who initially reported higher levels of distress. Then again, more highly dis- tressed parents may simply be more motivated to participate in treatment, as indicated by increases in number of sessions attended by families with a more distressed military par- ent, and moved to more effectively employ the skills taught in the program. This would be consistent with the “dose–response” finding that number of sessions attended by a family was predictive of degree of improvement in all of the outcome variables, including reduc- tions in parental distress, clinician ratings of parent functioning, and parent’s perception of program impact. All of these interpretations are consistent with the more general find- ing that parent’s baseline levels of distress and symptom expression may function as a moderator of positive treatment outcomes—a fact that may be used to inform strategies for screening and program inclusion.
The second goal of the study was to map out the direct and indirect relationships between baseline parental distress, improvements in family resilient functioning, and indices of parental psychological health and functioning. The findings indicated that per- ceptions of improvement in key family resilient processes such as communication, problem solving, affective responsiveness and involvement, and role clarity were directly predictive of improvement in psychological health for both military and civilian parents. The out- sized influence of the military parent’s perceptions was evidenced by the fact that the mili- tary parent’s perception of improved family functioning was predictive of improvements in the civilian parent’s psychological health, while the civilian parent did not have this influ- ence on the military parent. ...
