ただの愛子の心情です
ハジメ達が去って三日経ったウルの町。
荒れた大地の整備やおびただしい数の魔物の死体処理など頭の痛い問題は多々あるが、それでも町も人も無傷という、起きた事態に対してまさに奇跡としか言い様のない結果。その吉報は、直ちに避難した住民達や周辺の町、王都に伝えられた、戻ってきた住人達は、再会した家族や恋人、友人達と抱きしめ合い、互の無事を喜び合ってウルの町はさながらお祭りのような喧騒に包まれていた。
町の周囲にはハジメが残していった防壁がそのまま残っており、戦いの一部始終を見届けた者達は、いかに常識を超えた戦いだったのかを身振り手振りで、防壁から荒れた大地に視線をやりながら神話の語り部のごとく語って聞かせた。避難していた人達、特に子供達はそんな彼等の話に目をキラキラさせている。抜け目のない商人達は、既にハジメの防壁をウルの町の新たな名物として一儲けする算段を付けていた。
そして、町の人々は、ハジメと愛子の間にあったことを知らないので、未だにハジメ達のことを“豊穣の女神”が遣わした御使いだと信じており、ハジメの防壁に“女神の盾”と名づけて敬った。また、白髪眼帯の少年ハジメの事を“女神の剣”あるいは“女神の騎士”と呼び、同じく敬った。それを聞いたデビッド達本当の護衛騎士達が、ハジメと愛子の口付けを思い出しながら「やっぱり、アイツは気に入らない！！」と荒れ狂ったのは別の話。後に、自分の二つ名を聞いてハジメが身悶えるのも別の話だ。
若干、自分自身への恥ずかしい二つ名という誤算はあったものの、ハジメの思惑通り、愛子の名声と人望は鰻登りだった。町を歩けば、全ての人間の視線が集まっているのではというほどの集中砲火を受け、中には「ありがたや～」と拝み始める人までいる。この町で、確かに目に見える形で人々を救った愛子は、正しく“女神”だった。その噂は、既に周辺へと伝播を始めている。少なくとも、ウルの町では既に聖教教会の司教よりも愛子の言葉の方が重みを持っている事は間違いないだろう。
その愛子はというと……町の復興支援やら重鎮達への対応を無難にこなしつつ、それでも親しい人には丸分かりなくらい明からさまに心ここにあらずという有様だった。原因は、言わずもがなだろう。戦いの前にハジメから伝えられた数々の衝撃の事実のこともあるが何より、ハジメが清水を殺したことが、その瞬間の光景が、愛子の脳裏から離れず心を蝕んでいるのである。
その日も、一日の役目を終えて夕食時となり、“水妖精の宿”でいつのもの様に生徒達や護衛隊の騎士達と食事をとっていたのだが、愛子は機械的に料理を口に運びつつも、どこかボーとした様子で会話の内容にも気のない返事をするばかりだった。
「愛ちゃん先生……やっぱり、愛ちゃん先生の魔法は凄いですよね！ あんなに荒れてた大地もどんどん浄化されていって……あと一週間もあれば元に戻りそうですもんね！」
「……そうですね……よかったです」
園部優香が、愛子の心ここにあらずな様子に気がつきつつも、殊更明るい様子で話しかける。愛子の変調の原因を理解しているために何とか励ましたいのだ。しかし、園部の明るさを含んだ言葉にも、愛子はまるで定型文をそのまま言葉にしたような気のない返事し返さない。園部が、「まだ、だめか～」と肩を落とす。
「愛子……今日も町長や司教様から何か言われたのか？ 本当に困ったら俺に言ってくれ。例え、司教様が相手でも愛子を困らせるような真似は俺が許さない。俺が・・、愛子の騎士なんだからな。何時でも、俺だけは・・・・愛子の味方だ」
「……そうですね……よかったです」
デビッドが、励ましたいのか口説きたいのかよくわからない言葉を愛子に贈る。神殿騎士でありながら司教に楯突くという発言はかなり危ないのだが、既に愛の戦士と成り果てているデビッドには関係ないのだろう。やたらと“俺”という部分が強調されているのは、誰に対抗しているのか……周囲の騎士達も察しはついているのでデビッドに同意しつつも、さり気なく抜け駆けしようとしている自分達の隊長に鋭い牽制の視線を送っている。
しかし、そんなデビッドのさり気ないアピールは某お昼の長寿番組の相槌の如き同じ言葉であっさり流された。聞いていたかも怪しいところだ。生徒達が肩を落とすデビッドに「ざまぁ～」という表情をする。一部の騎士達も同じ表情をしている。
そんな生徒達や騎士達のやり取りにも気がついていないのか、愛子は特に反応することもなく淡々と食事を続けていた。
（……私が、もっときちんと清水君とお話が出来ていれば……あの子の思いにもっと早く気がついていれば……そうすればこんな事にはならなかった……それに、彼に、同じ生徒である彼に、あんな事を頼まなければ……あの時、人質になんかならなければ……私が……死んでいれば……彼も清水君を殺す必要なんて……どうして、殺したの……同じクラスメイトなのに……敵だから？ ……それだけであんなにあっさり？ ……人を殺すってそんなに簡単なことなの？ ……そんな簡単に出来てしまうことなの？ ……そんなのおかしい……人は魔物ではないのに……あんな躊躇わずに……彼は……簡単に人を殺せる人間？ ……放っておけば他の子達も……彼は危険？ ……彼がいなければ清水君も死ななかった？……彼がいなくなれば他の子達は安全？ ……彼さえいなければ……ッ！？ 私は何を！ ……ダメ、これ以上考えてはダメ！）
今の愛子の心の内は、後悔と自責を延々と繰り返している状態だった……そして下手をすればハジメへの恐れと恨みが芽生えそうで、それを慌てて打ち消し、再び最初の思考に戻るということを繰り返していた。考えることが多すぎて、考えたくないことも多すぎて、愛子の心は、まるで本棚が倒壊した図書館の様に整理されていない情報が散乱しグチャグチャの状態だった。
そんな時、スっと心に響くような穏やかで温かみのある声音が愛子に届く。
「愛子様。本日の料理は、お口に合いませんでしたか？」
「ふぇ？」
“水妖精の宿”オーナーのフォス・セルオだ。彼の声は決して大きくはないどころか、むしろ小さいくらいだ。だが、この宿にいる者でフォスの言葉を聞き逃すものはいない。彼の深みがあって落ち着いた声音は、必ず相手に届くのだ。今も、心を思考の渦に囚われていた愛子へあっさり言葉を届け、その意識を現実へと回帰させた。
変な声を出してしまった事に気がつき、愛子は少し頬を染めつつ穏やかに微笑むフォスに視線を向ける。
「え、えっと何でしょう？ すいません、ちょっとボーとしてました」
「いえいえ、お気になさらず。何やら浮かないお顔でしたので、料理がお口に合わなかったのかと。宜しければ他をお出ししますが……」
「い、いえ！ お料理は、とっても美味しいですよ。ちょっと考え事をしていたもので……」
とても美味しいと言いながら、食べた料理の味が思い出せない愛子。周囲を見渡せば、生徒達や騎士達も、どこか心配そうな眼差しを自分に向けている。自分が相当、思考の坩堝にはまっていることに気がつき、これではいけないと気を取り直し、食事を再開するが、少し慌てていたため気管に入り盛大にむせた。
涙目でケホッケホッとむせる愛子に、生徒達や騎士達があわあわとする。そんな様子を視界に収めつつ、さり気なくナプキンと水を用意するフォス。
「す、すみません。ご迷惑を……」
「迷惑など、とんでもない」
愛子の失態を見ても穏やかな微笑みを崩さないフォスに、安心感を抱きつつも恐縮する愛子。そんな愛子に、フォスは目を細めると少し考える素振りを見せて、やはり静かな落ち着いた声音で語りかけた。
「ふむ。愛子様。僭越ながら一つ宜しいでしょうか？」
「え？ ええ、はい。なんでしょうか？」
「愛子様の信じたいことを信じてみてはいかがでしょう？」
「へ？」
フォスの脈絡のない言葉に愛子は頭に“？”を浮かべて首を傾げる。それに、「言葉足らずでした」と苦笑いしながらフォスが話を続ける。
「どうやら、愛子様の心は、今、大変な混乱の中にあるように見受けられます。考えるべき事も考えたくない事も多すぎて、何をどうすればいいのかわからない。何が最善か、自分がどうしたいのか、それもわからない。わからない事ばかりで、どうにかしなければと焦りばかりが募り、それがまた混乱に拍車をかける悪循環。違いますか？」
「ど、どうして……」
今の愛子の心の内をドンピシャリと言い当てられて、思わず言葉を詰まらせる愛子。そんな愛子に、フォスは「色々なお客様を見てきていますので」と穏やかに微笑む。
「そういう時は、取り敢えず“信じたいものを信じてみる”というのも手の一つかと。よく、人は信じたいものだけ信じて真実を見逃すと、そう警告的に言われることがあります。それは確かにその通りなのでしょう。しかし、人の行動は信じるところから始まると私などは思うのです。ならば、“動けない”時には逆に“信じたいものを信じる”というのも悪くない手だと、そう思うのです」
「……信じたいことを信じる」
フォスのその言葉を愛子は反芻する。愛子の心は、今、後悔と罪悪感と、芽生えそうなハジメへの疑心、恨みでぐるぐると渦巻いている。ハジメは確かに愛子の大切な生徒ではあったが、同じく大切な生徒である清水を殺害し、場合によっては他の生徒の命をも奪いかねない存在であると理解した瞬間、ハジメを自分の大切なものを奪おうとする脅威であると認識してしまったのだ。それでも、ハジメもまた生徒である以上、完全に切り捨てられない。大量虐殺をしようとした清水を見捨てられなかったように。だからこそ、どうすればいいのかわからず混乱する。難儀な性格であると、愛子自身も思うが、こればっかりは仕方ない。それが畑山愛子“先生”なのだから。
フォスは、愛子に何があったのかを知らない。彼女が、ある意味信じたいことを信じすぎたが為に今の状態にあるとは知らない。それでも、信じていたものが尽く崩れ去って身動きが取れなくなっている状態で盛大に失態を犯した今では、見え方も異なり有効かもしれなかった。
そう思った愛子は、食事の手を止めて思考に没頭し始める。
（信じたいものを信じる。私が信じたいこと……何でしょう？ 一つは、生徒達と皆で日本に帰る事です。でも、それはもう叶わない。今は、これ以上欠けることなく皆で帰れるという事を信じたい……彼の話。クラスメイトの誰かに殺されかけたという話。それは信じたくありません……彼が、邪魔すれば私達でも殺すと言った事、人殺しを躊躇わない人間に…生徒達を脅かす敵に……これも信じたくありません。でも、実際、彼はあの子を……清水君を躊躇わず殺した。なら、もう彼は……いえ、信じたいことを信じるのです）
再び、黒い感情が浮かびそうになるのを瞑目して押さえ込む愛子。周囲の者達は、微動だにせず何かを考え込む愛子を心配そうに見ている。
（彼は言っていました。“敵だから”と。それに“余裕がない”とも。清水君を生かした後、自分や周りの大切な人が再び襲われることを危惧したから殺した。それは、誰かを思ってのこと。実際、ただの冷酷な人間ならユエさんやシアさんがあんなに信頼を寄せるはずがありません。彼は、あの子達のためにも後顧の憂いを断ちたかった……だから生かしておけなかった。つまり、私が、清水君をどうにかできるとは思えなかったのですね……清水君を生かしたければ、改心させられると確信出来るくらいの何かを私が見せなければならなかった……結局は、私が無力なばかりに……清水君は……それでも、あんな風に殺すなんて……唯でさえ清水君は弱って……ッ）
清水を撃ち殺したハジメにも、そうするだけの明確な理由があった。だから、人殺しを何とも思わない壊れた人間などではなく、理解できない化け物でもなく、闇雲に生徒達を害する敵でもなく、未だ自分の言葉が届く“生徒”なのだと信じようとする愛子。そして、その思考過程で、生徒が生徒を撃ち殺すという衝撃の
